Pilates was invented by the German man, Joseph Hubertus Pilates (1880-1967). As a child he was frail, but took up diving, skiing, gymnastics, boxing, circus performing and became a self defence instructor.
He went on to work in England when World War 1 broke out. He returned to Germany after the war and was summonsed by Hitler to train the German Army. He refused this offer and fled to America in 1926. Together with his wife Clara, whom he met on the boat sailing to America, they opened a physical fitness studio in New York. Their aim was to make people more aware of themselves, more in touch with their whole, integrated being – to bring body and mind together into a single, dynamic, well-functioning entity. Joe passed away in 1967 at the age of 87. He left no will, and had designated no line of succession for the “Pilates” work to carry on. Still, his work was to remain.
The last 30 plus years, has seen the rest of the world come to realise the great benefits of 'Pilates'. The Pilates Method is now recognized as a leading practice in medicine, and rehabilitation, for athletes and sporting bodies, celebrities, performers and the general population.
Pilates is an exercise regime aimed at strengthening and stretching the body at the same time. The dynamic routines create strong, lengthened muscles which improve posture and prevent injury. It trains the mind to understand which muscles should be worked during movement. It helps switch off muscles working unnecessarily and repatterns injured or lazy ones.
During a workout the mind is concentrating on the precise movements and breath patterns. The outcome is increased oxygen supply, removal of waste through the lymph system, and general improvement of the immune system. A session brings a feeling of rejuvenation to body and mind.
